Lasagna is a traditional Italian dish that consists of layers of wide, flat pasta noodles, alternating the noodles with tomato sauce and cheese. We love using homemade marinara sauce or Bolognese sauce for the sauce in lasagna.

I love making my meat lover's lasagna every Christmas! It's full of ground sausage and ground beef, not to mention fresh herbs and cheesy ricotta.

For a lighter version, you can make a meat and vegetable lasagna. It's full of vegetables like zucchini, eggplant, onions, and garlic while also having some lean ground beef to make it a well rounded meal.

The great thing about lasagna is you can make it now and freeze it! It freezes for up to 3 months. Defrost it right in your refrigerator and then bake it when you are ready.

How To Make Lasagna

Make the sauce in a Dutch oven that you would like to layer in the lasagna pan. Make sure you have a 9x13 inch pan to bake the lasagna in. Mix together the ricotta, eggs, fresh herbs, and parmesan cheese in a medium bowl. Boil the noodles according to package instructions and then drain them well.

Layer the sauce in the bottom of the baking dish.

Lasagna noodles are added on top of the tomato sauce.

Add a layer of noodles on top of the sauce.

Mozzarella cheese is sprinkled on top of the meat sauce.

Spoon the ricotta mixture, sprinkle with mozzarella cheese, and then top with more sauce.

Keep layering the ingredients until all the noodles and sauce are used. Bake for 45 minutes to 1 hour at 375 degrees F. Make sure to allow the lasagna to cool for 15 minutes before slicing. If you do not let it rest, the lasagna will spill everywhere and not have that nice stack that we require of a lasagna slice.

Can I make lasagna ahead of time?

Yes! You can put the lasagna together completely, cover it with aluminum foil, and then place it in the refrigerator for up to 48 hours. The next day, place it in the oven for 375 degrees F for up to an hour until heated through.

What should I do with leftover lasagna?

You can cover the pan of lasagna with plastic wrap and place it in the refrigerator. If you prefer, you can take the lasagna out of the pan and place the leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Can I use other types of noodles?

You can use gluten-free noodles, whole wheat noodles, or your favorite brand and cook them according to the package instructions. If you use no boil noodles, you don't have to cook them and can just layer them right in the pan. The sauce and the cheese will cook the noodles right in the oven.
