Why You'll Love This Recipe!

  • They only have a few simple ingredients. This eggnog waffle recipe is made with ingredients you probably already have in the house.
  • They are easy to make! Unlike traditional Belgian waffles that need the separate the egg yolks from the egg whites, beat the egg whites until they are whipped perfectly and then carefully folded into the batter, these are mixed all in one bowl and made right in a waffle iron! You could call them more of a regular American waffle style.
  • They are freezer friendly! This eggnog waffles recipe can be made in advance and frozen for a quick breakfast down the line.
  • They have delicious holiday flavor! Is there anything that screams "holiday" more than eggnog? It's one of my favorite flavors of the season!

Ingredients You'll Need

You only need a few simple ingredients for this recipe!
  • Flour. We'll be using all purpose flour for this recipe, but you can definitely make waffles with self rising flour too!
  • Baking powder. To make the waffles rise and get that crispy waffle texture.
  • Melted butter. A neutral oil can be used instead of melted butter if you would prefer.
  • Eggnog. Use your favorite brand of creamy eggnog or you can also make your own!
  • Sugar. We are using white sugar, but you can use brown sugar if that is all you have on hand.
  • Spices. Fresh nutmeg is best. Nutmeg tends to lose it's potency as it sits, so freshly ground is best.

Equipment You'll Need

  • Waffle Maker
  • Measuring Cups
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Mixing Bowls

How To Make Eggnog Waffles

Preheat your waffle maker according to the manufacturer's instructions.

In a large bowl or a liquid measuring cup, mix together the melted butter, eggnog, and egg until fully combined. Add the sugar and mix again.

The eggs are added to a large bowl.
Crack two large eggs into the bowl.
The eggnog is mixed into the egg mixture.
Mix the wet ingredients well.

In a medium bowl, add the flour, baking powder, and nutmeg. Mix the dry ingredients until fully combined.

Pour the flour mixture into the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. It's ok if there are a few lumps left in the batter, you do not want to overmix.

Spray the waffle maker with nonstick cooking spray or spread on melted butter. Scoop batter into the waffle maker. Cook based on your waffle maker instructions. Serve with maple syrup and butter.

Tips and Tricks

  • Make sure your waffle maker is preheated fully before adding the waffle batter.  This will make sure your waffles are nice and crisp.
  • If your waffle maker does not have a light that lets your know when the waffles are done, it's time to take your waffles out of the waffle iron when steam starts coming out of the iron.
  • Do not open the waffle maker once you close it. To get the crispiest waffles, it's important that the waffles remain untouched until fully cooked.
  • Be very careful when taking the hot waffles out of the waffle iron.

How To Serve Eggnog Waffles

Serve these waffles with a piping hot mug of hot chocolate and whipped cream. If you enjoy drinking eggnog, enjoy this waffles with some mugs of eggnog too!

They are also delicious with butter and maple syrup. Good quality maple syrup is the best way to enjoy maple syrup on waffles! If you need more ideas, check out these amazing recipes for what to eat with waffles!

Storage Tips

  • Making the batter ahead of time. To make the batter ahead of time, mix all the ingredients together and then place it in an airtight container. The batter can be kept in the refrigerator up to 24 hours. If the batter is too thick after being in the refrigerator, simply add a few tablespoons of eggnog to thin out the waffles.
  • Making the waffles ahead of time. The waffles can be kept in the refrigerator once they are cooled. Place them in an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator up to 4 days. To reheat the waffles, place the in the toaster oven for 1-2 minutes until they are warm and crispy.
  • Freezing the waffles. Allow the waffles to cool to room temperature. Then wrap the waffles in plastic wrap and place them in a gallon Ziploc bag. They can be frozen for 3 months. To reheat, place them in the toaster oven right from frozen. Toast them for 2 minutes or until completely thawed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make these into eggnog pancakes instead?

This batter is a little thick for pancakes, so to make these pancakes you would need to add ½ cup more eggnog, at least.

How many waffles does this batter make?

That depends on how big your waffle maker is. I have a large waffle maker that makes two large waffles at a time. If you have a smaller waffle maker you could make up to 8 waffles with this batter.

Why are my waffles soggy?

To prevent your waffles from being soggy, make sure your waffle iron is prepared fully. You want to have a really hot waffle iron so the batter sears immediately and crisps as it cooks.

Eggnog is in the background of the waffles with a fork holding a piece of the waffles.
Make a big batch for the holiday season!

I never thought of using Eggnog for waffles. When I went to gather ingredients, I found our milk had soured but we had Eggnog. These are delicious. I used self-rising flour and ground nutmeg. I will definitely make these again.
