What is Kefir?
Kefir is a tart and tangy cultured milk. It is full of good for you probiotics and is high in calcium and protein. In this recipe, we are using kefir where you would normally use buttermilk. The consistency is a little thicker than buttermilk and gives this smoothie a tang that you don't get from regular milk.
Let's Make A Mixed Berry Kefir Smoothie!
Wash all the berries and cut the stem off the strawberries. Peel the banana.
Add all the ingredients to the blender and add at least 1 cup of ice. If you prefer a thicker smoothie, add more ice.
Blend the smoothie until the consistency is pourable. Serve immediately.
Variations
- I used raspberry kefir in this recipe, but you can use your favorite flavor of kefir. Lifeway has tons of different flavors! You can even grab plain kefir to limit the amount of sugar in the smoothie.
- Use frozen fruit! If you don't have fresh berries, use frozen strawberries
- Make popsicles! Pour the blended smoothie into popsicle molds and freeze for a few hours. The kids love these popsicles in the Summer heat!
