Whether you're making pancakes, waffles, or biscuits, this whole wheat Baking Mix is the perfect staple to keep in your kitchen! It's an easy to make nutritious twist on Bisquick, but made with better ingredients!
I love making my own homemade Bisquick too and keep it in my kitchen all the time!
One of my secrets to all my recipes is a good baking mix. Sometimes I have a box of Bisquick in the pantry to make my favorite bisquick recipes like Bisquick chocolate chip cookies, Bisquick waffles, or even a Bisquick breakfast casserole, but other times, I want to make recipes with whole wheat flour for a little extra flavor and fiber. That's where this recipe comes in!
I love making whole wheat baking mix because it’s such a simple way to make life easier in the kitchen! It saves so much time when I’m whipping up pancakes, biscuits, or waffles, and knowing it’s made with whole wheat flour makes me feel good about serving it to my family.

Ingredients to Gather
- Whole wheat flour. There are so many great whole wheat flours in the grocery store. Bob's Red Mill makes a great one as does King Arthur. Find your favorite and use that.
- Baking powder. This helps all of your ingredients rise and become light and fluffy.
- Sugar. Bisquick has a bit of sugar in it, so we are adding it to the mix so you don't have to add sugar to your recipes if you don't want to.
- Butter. The butter should be very cold. Cold butter is key to creating those lovely, flaky layers in biscuits and other baked goods. Make sure you don’t let it soften while you’re mixing.
- Salt. For a little extra flavor.

How To Make Whole Wheat Baking Mix
Step 1: In the bowl of a food processor, add the dry ingredients. Cut the cold butter into small pieces and place it in the food processor.
Step 2: Turn the food processor on and pulse for 1-2 minutes or until the mixture is combined. You’re looking for a texture like coarse crumbs. The butter pieces should be small and evenly distributed throughout.
Lynn's Tip!
If you don't have a food processor, no worries! Use a pastry cutter, two knives, or your fingertips to cut the butter into the flour mixture.
How To Use Whole Wheat Baking Mix
You can use whole wheat baking mix in all your favorite recipes just like the store-bought version. Here are a few easy ways to use it!
- Whole wheat pancakes. For a quick breakfast, mix 1 cup of whole wheat baking mix with 1 egg and ¾ cup of milk. Cook on a hot griddle until golden brown.
- Biscuits. Mix 2 cups of your whole wheat baking mix with ⅔ cup milk. Stir until combined, then drop spoonfuls of dough onto a baking sheet and bake at 425°F for 8-10 minutes.
- Waffles. I love making whole wheat waffles for my family! Combine 2 cups of mix with 1 egg, 1 ¼ cups of milk, and 2 tablespoons of oil. Cook in a preheated waffle iron until crispy and golden.
- Quick dumplings. Mix 2 cups of the baking mix with ⅔ cup of milk. Drop spoonfuls into simmering soup or stew for yummy dumplings.
Storage Info
It's important to note that this baking mix is not shelf stable since we are using butter. It needs to be kept in a refrigerator or freezer.
Store this mix in an airtight container. I like to keep it in a large mason. Store it in the fridge for up to 3 months.
For longer storage, freeze it, and it will keep for 6 months or more. You can use the baking mix right out of the refrigerator. Just mix it with the rest of the ingredients whenever you are ready to use it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely! Just substitute a gluten-free flour blend for the whole wheat flour. Make sure the blend contains xanthan gum or another binder for structure. That's classic in most gluten free flours.
I have a recipe for homemade Bisquick that uses all white flour. If you want to make this a little lighter, you can use hand all purpose flour and half whole wheat flour.
Yes, you can! Just keep in mind that whole wheat flour is denser, so your baked goods might have a slightly heartier texture.
