Don't forget about zucchini breads! Death by chocolate zucchini bread is a favorite in my house and so is Nutella Swirl zucchini bread, because who doesn't love Nutella? This sweet Creme Brulé recipe is hard for anyone to resist!

In the Spring, we love blueberry and lemon anything, but blueberry and lemon zucchini bread is the best! Be sure to check out what to serve with banana bread for lots of delicious recipes!

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • It's so easy to make! You can make this recipe all in one bowl and keep the cleanup to a minimum!
  • It's a great way to use up extra bananas! If you are like my family, we always buy more bananas then we can eat. There is always a spotty banana or two hanging out on the counter. This bread is a great way to use up those extra bananas.
  • No extra equipment is required! No need to break out the stand mixer or hand mixer, this one is mixed by hand and poured into the loaf pan.

Ingredients for Double Chocolate Banana Bread

Ingredients for the double chocolate banana bread

  • Brown sugar- Granulated sugar can be used instead.

  • Melted butter- Coconut oil can be used instead.
  • Cooled coffee- To bring out the chocolate flavor.

How To Make Double Chocolate Banana Bread

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Butter an 8 inch loaf pan and set it aside.
  2. Sift the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda together in a medium bowl. Set that aside.
  3. Mash the bananas well in a large bowl. Add the eggs, melted butter, brown sugar, and coffee. Mix well until fully combined.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Mix in the chocolate chips. Don’t overmix, it’s ok if there are a few lumps.
  5. Pour the batter into the loaf pan and bake for 1 hour or until a toothpick is inserted and comes out clean. Cool before serving.

How To Ripen Bananas

  • To ripen bananas faster than they normally would, place the bananas in a brown bag with an apple. The gases from the skin of the apple speeds up the ripening process. This way will take about a day to ripen.
  • If you are in a pinch and want to ripen bananas quickly, preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Place the whole banana on a baking sheet and place them in the oven for 15 minutes. When the skins turn completely black they are ready! Carefully peel the banana and let it cool, then proceed with the recipe.
  • Otherwise you can do what we do, leave them out on the counter until we forget about them and then make banana bread

How To Freeze Banana Bread

Double chocolate banana bread freezes perfectly. When the banana bread is completely cooled, place the bread in a Ziploc bag.

Place the Ziploc bag in the freezer for up to 3 months. When you are ready to use the banana bread, simply take out the bread and leave it on the counter to defrost.

You can also cut the banana bread into slices and place the slices on a parchment lined baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for an hour or two, until the slices are completely frozen.

Place the frozen slices in a Ziploc bag and freeze the bag for up to 3 months. Take out a slice and heat it in the toaster oven or the microwave when you are ready to eat it.

Tips and Tricks

  • If the banana bread is browning too quickly, take a piece of aluminum foil and tent it over the banana bread. This will allow the bread to continue cooking evenly without overbrowning.
  • Make sure to grease the loaf pan well with butter. This batter will tend to stick if the loaf pan is not properly buttered.
  • Though it will be tempting to cut into the bread as soon as it comes out of the oven, it's best to let this bread cool before serving. That will allow the chocolate to harden and for the bread to set up. Otherwise, you will end up with crumbles of banana bread instead of slices.

Frequently Asked Questions About Double Chocolate Banana Bread

Can I make this banana bread into muffins?

Yes! Instead of placing the batter into a loaf pan, scoop the batter into a lined muffin tin. Bake for 20-25 minutes until a toothpick is inserted and comes out clean.

Can I make this banana bread dairy-free?

Yes! You can substitute coconut oil or a flavorless oil for the melted butter. Make sure that your chocolate chips are dairy free as well.

How long will double chocolate banana bread last?

This will keep fresh on the counter in a Ziploc bag or airtight container for 3-4 days. After that you will want to freeze the leftovers, so they do not go bad.

  • ½ cup Brown Sugar
  • 2 Eggs
  • ½ cup Butter Melted
  • 1 tablespoon Coffee Cooled
  • 1 cup Chocolate Chips Semisweet

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Butter an 8 inch loaf pan and set it aside.
  • Sift the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and baking soda together in a medium bowl. Set that aside.

Notes

  • The coffee brings out the flavor of the chocolate.  If you do not have coffee, you can omit the ingredient.
  • If the bread starts browning too quickly in the oven, tent a piece of aluminum foil over the bread to prevent it from browning too quickly.
  • Grease the loaf pan well.  This batter will tend to stick if not greased properly.
