Ingredients for Double Chocolate Banana Bread
- Brown and spotty bananas- You want them brown and spotty, not black.
- Brown sugar- Granulated sugar can be used instead. The overripe bananas add sweetness as well as the sugar.
- Eggs- To aid in the leavening and also add texture to the bread.
- Melted butter- This delicious banana bread recipe needs some fat to help the texture. If you don't have melted butter, vegetable oil or coconut oil can be used instead.
- Cooled coffee- To bring out the chocolate flavor.
- All-purpose flour- Bread flour can be used instead or you can use a combination or white whole wheat flour and all purpose flour for a little more fiber in the bread.
- Unsweetened cocoa- Use a good quality one like Hershey's or Dutch process cocoa powder. Make sure it is unsweetened to make sure we are not adding more sweetness to the bread.
- Baking powder and baking soda- To make the bread rise.
- Chocolate chips- Semisweet chocolate chips or your favorite chocolate chips. Milk chocolate chips would be a great substitute for semi-sweet chocolate chips in this recipe too.

How To Make Double Chocolate Banana Bread
How To Quickly Ripen Bananas
To ripen bananas faster than they normally would, place the bananas in a brown bag with an apple. The gases from the skin of the apple speeds up the ripening process. This way will take about a day to ripen.
If you are in a pinch and want to ripen bananas quickly, preheat the oven to 300 degrees. Place the whole banana on a baking sheet and place them in the oven for 15 minutes. When the skins turn completely black they are ready! Carefully peel the over ripe banana and let it cool, then proceed with the recipe.
Otherwise you can do what we do, leave them out on the counter until we forget about them and then make banana bread!
How To Store Double Chocolate Banana Bread
This will keep fresh on the counter in a Ziploc bag or airtight container for 3-4 days. After that you will want to freeze the leftovers, so they do not go bad.
Double chocolate banana bread freezes perfectly. When the banana bread is completely cooled, place the bread in a Ziploc bag.
Place the Ziploc bag in the freezer for up to 3 months. When you are ready to use the banana bread, simply take out the bread and leave it on the counter to defrost.
You can also cut the banana bread into slices and place the slices on a parchment lined baking sheet. Place the baking sheet in the freezer for an hour or two, until the slices are completely frozen.
Place the frozen slices in a Ziploc bag and freeze the bag for up to 3 months. Take out a slice and heat it in the toaster oven or the microwave when you are ready to eat it.
Tips and Tricks
- If the banana bread is browning too quickly, take a piece of aluminum foil and tent it over the banana bread. This will allow the bread to continue cooking evenly without overbrowning.
- Make sure to grease the loaf pan well with butter. This batter will tend to stick if the loaf pan is not properly buttered.
- Though it will be tempting to cut into the bread as soon as it comes out of the oven, it's best to let this bread cool before serving. That will allow the chocolate to harden and for the bread to set up. Otherwise, you will end up with crumbles of banana bread instead of slices.
- Add some other mix ins! You can add peanut butter chips, chopped nuts, or a combination of chocolate chips into the batter.

Notes
