Do you have trouble making rice? For the longest time I either undercooked it and ended up with crunchy rice. Or, I overcooked it and ended up with mushy rice. However, after making it in the electric pressure cooker, that all changed!
The Instant Pot (otherwise known as my favorite rice cooker!) makes perfect, fluffy rice every single time! When you figure out the right ratio of rice and liquid, you'll never make rice any other way!
Use this method to make plain long grain rice in the Instant Pot. Or, switch it up with options like Instant Pot cilantro lime brown rice, Instant Pot Mexican rice, or even vegan Instant Pot rice pudding!

If you are making plain white rice on the stove top, you have to let the rice cook for at least 20 minutes and then let it sit for another 10 minutes. In the Instant Pot, that time is cut in half!

What is Long Grain Rice?
Long grain rice is any type of rice that is four to five times longer than it is wide. Common varieties include Basmati rice, Jasmine rice, and Carolina rice. They have a relatively low starch content, which allows them to cook up nice and fluffy.
For this recipe, I prefer to use long grain white rice to keep the process quick and easy. You can use long grain brown rice if preferred, but it takes longer to cook. So, you'll want to make sure to increase the cooking time slightly.
Ingredients For Instant Pot Long Grain Rice
Three ingredients are all you need for this recipe!

- Long grain dry rice. For this recipe, I am using jasmine rice.
- Liquid. Water, chicken broth, or vegetable broth all work. Make sure the liquid is cold or at room so the Instant Pot preheats properly.
- Olive oil. You can use vegetable oil or butter if you prefer.

How To Make Instant Pot Long Grain Rice!
Step 1: Rinse the rice in a fine mesh strainer under cold water until the water runs clear.
Step 2: Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the Instant Pot. Then, add the rinsed rice, and turn on the sauté function. Cook for 2 minutes to gently coat the rice in olive oil.
Step 3: Cancel the saute function, and add the liquid to the Instant Pot. Cover the Instant Pot with the lid, and make sure the knob on the lid is set to the sealing position.
Step 4: Hit the rice button on your Instant Pot, and cook on low pressure for 10 minutes. When 10 minutes of cook time is up, quick release the pressure.
Step 5: Fluff the rice with a fork, and enjoy!



Lynn's Tip!
The ratio you will use is 1 ¼ cup of water or liquid to 1 cup of rice. Since we are using 2 cups of rice, we will use 2 ½ cups of water or your preferred liquid.
Tips and Tricks
- Do not wait to naturally release the pressure as this will overcook the rice and cause it to become mushy.
- If your Instant Pot does not have a rice button, cook the rice on low pressure for 10 minutes.
- Prefer to cook on high pressure? Pressure cook the rice for 2 minutes on high pressure and then natural release for 10 minutes. Immediately release the rest of the pressure after 10 minutes, fluff, and serve!
- Making a lot of rice? Just remember the rice-to-water ratio. 1 ¼ cups of water or 1 cup of rice.
- To avoid getting the burn notice on your Instant Pot, make sure you have enough water in the pot. The burn notice means that all your rice is sticking to the bottom of the pot, causing a huge headache and mess to clean!

Make Ahead Instructions
Rice is great for meal prep. Make a large batch, and store leftover cooked rice in the Instant Pot in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. Leftover rice is perfect for a homemade fried rice recipe!
You can also freeze leftover rice for up to 3 months. To serve, defrost it in the refrigerator overnight. Then, reheat in the microwave.

Frequently Asked Questions
Rinsing rice removes any excess starch that may have built up during the packaging process. This prevents the rice from being overly sticky and clumping together.
If rice sticks to the bottom of the pot, there may not have been enough water. Make sure you are using that extra ¼ cup of water per cup of rice. The olive oil in the bottom of the pot should also help in making sure the rice does not stick to the bottom.
Yes! You can use this method to make long-grain rice, short-grain rice, or medium-grain rice. Brown rice takes longer to cook. So, you will want to increase the amount of cook time to prevent it from being crunchy.

How To Make The Best Instant Pot Long Grain Rice
Ingredients
