Light, fluffy, and ready in 15 minutes, Instant Pot Long Grain Rice is the perfect side dish to any dinner. Serve this rice with your favorite chili, stir fry, or in a burrito bowl!

Do you have trouble making rice? For the longest time I either undercooked it and ended up with crunchy rice or overcooked it and ended up with mushy rice. After making it in the electric pressure cooker, that all changed!
The Instant Pot (otherwise known as my favorite rice cooker!) makes perfect, fluffy rice every single time! When you figure out the right ratio of rice and liquid, you'll never make rice any other way!

Why You'll Love This Recipe
- It's great for meal prep! The Instant Pot can make a lot of rice at one time. Make a few servings and use them for lunches or dinners throughout the week.
- No need to babysit the rice! Add the ingredients to the Instant Pot and let the rice cook in the liquid.
- It cooks up quick! If you are in a pinch, rice is a great recipe to make. You can quickly and easily make this recipe and add it to chili, soups, or taco bowls! If you are making plain white rice on the stove top, you have to let the rice cook for at least 20 minutes and then let it sit for another 10 minutes. In the Instant Pot, that time is cut in half!

What is Long Grain Rice?
Jasmine rice and basmati rice are both examples of long grain rice. This kind of rice is commonly used in Indian and Asian cuisines. Long grain rice tends to get a little sticky as it cooks because of the starch content in the rice.
In this recipe we are using white rice but long grain brown rice can be used instead. Brown rice tends to take more time than white rice to cook, so if you are using brown rice instead, make sure to increase the cooking time.
Ingredients For Instant Pot Long Grain Rice

- Long grain dry rice. For this recipe, I am using jasmine rice.
- A liquid. Water, chicken broth, or vegetable broth all work. Make sure the liquid is at room temperature or cold, so the Instant Pot preheats properly.
- Olive oil. You can use vegetable oil or butter if you prefer.
Equipment You'll Need
- Instant Pot. I have a 6-quart Instant Pot that I use, and I love it! If you have a 3-quart Instant Pot, half this recipe.
- Measuring Cups
- Measuring Spoon
- Liquid Measuring Cup
- Fine Mesh Strainer

Let's Make Instant Pot Long Grain Rice!
The ratio you will use is 1 ¼ cup of water or liquid, to 1 cup of rice. Since we are using 2 cups of rice, we will use 2 ½ cups of water or your preferred liquid.
Place the rice in a fine mesh strainer and run the rice under cold water until the water runs clear.
Add 1 tablespoon of olive oil to the Instant Pot. Add the rinsed rice. Turn the saute function on the Instant Pot for 2 minutes to gently coat the rice in olive oil.
Cancel the saute function and add the liquid to the Instant Pot. Cover the Instant Pot with the lid and make sure the knob on the lid is set to the sealing position.
Hit the rice button on your Instant Pot and cook on low pressure for 10 minutes. When 10 minutes of cook time is up, quick release the pressure.
With a fork, fluff the rice and serve!

Tips and Tricks
- Do not wait to naturally release the pressure as this will overcook the rice and cause you to have mushy rice.
- If your Instant Pot does not have a rice button, cook the rice on low pressure for 10 minutes.
- Prefer to cook on high pressure? Pressure cook the rice for 2 minutes on high pressure and then natural release for 10 minutes. Immediately release the rest of the pressure after 10 minutes, fluff and serve!
- Making a lot of rice? Just remember the rice to water ratio. 1 ¼ cups of water or 1 cup of rice.
- To avoid getting the burn notice on your Instant Pot, make sure you have enough water in the pot. The burn notice means that all your rice is sticking to the bottom of the pot, causing a huge headache and mess to clean!

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! Rice is great for meal prep. Make a large batch of rice and store the leftover rice in an airtight container in the refrigerator. You can also freeze rice. Add the cooled rice to a Ziploc bag and freeze the rice for up to 3 months. To defrost the rice, place the bag in the refrigerator until it is completely defrosted.
Rinsing the rice gets rid of excess starch that may have built up during the packaging process. This results in a less sticky rice and rice kernels that are separate.
If rice sticks to the bottom of the pot, there may not have been enough water in the Instant Pot. Make sure you are using that extra ¼ cup of water per cup of rice. The olive oil in the bottom of the pot should also help in making sure the rice does not stick to the bottom.
Yes! You can use this method to make long grain rice, short grain rice, or medium grain rice. Brown rice takes longer to cook, so you will want to up the amount of cook time.
