Light, airy, and easy to make, these Cinnamon and Sugar Kefir Snickerdoodles are simple to make and a crowd pleaser! Full of warm spices, these soft cookies will become a new favorite for the holidays!

When I was thinking of recipes to make with kefir, I had to make a cookie! And at the holidays, cinnamon and sugar is everywhere. What's a simple cookie that everyone loves, snickerdoodles!

When I made this recipe, my daughter almost ate the entire batch. She loved them and has asked me numerous times to make them since. They will be a staple this season in my holiday tins!

Ingredients You'll Need

This recipe for kefir snickerdoodles is made without cream of tartar. The baking powder and baking soda do enough leavening with the kefir that you do not need to add cream of tartar.

  • Cinnamon
  • Baking Soda
  • Baking Powder
  • Butter- softened to room temperature
  • Granulated Sugar
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla
  • Vanilla Kefir

What is Kefir?

Kefir is a tart and tangy cultured milk. It is full of good for you probiotics and is high in calcium and protein. In this recipe, we are using kefir where you would normally use buttermilk.

For this recipe, it adds in the rise of the cookies, making them more of a light and airy cookie, then a dense and chewy cookie.

Equipment To Make Kefir Snickerdoodles

  • Stand mixer or hand mixer
  • Parchment paper or silicone mat
  • Baking Sheet
  • Mixing Bowls
  • Measuring Cups
  • Measuring Spoons
  • Ice Cream Scoop- for equal sized cookies

Let's Make Kefir Snickerdoodles!

In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, mix together the softened butter and sugar. Beat well for 2 minute to cream them together. Add the kefir, vanilla, and eggs to the mixture. Mix again until well combined.

In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix in the stand mixer until combined.

Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate the dough for at least one hour.

When you are ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees. In a small bowl or plate, mix together ¼ cup of granulated sugar with 1 tablespoon of cinnamon. Mix well to combine.

With an ice cream scoop, scoop dough into the plate with the cinnamon and sugar and roll the dough ball in the mixture. Place the dough ball on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes until the cookies are just golden brown. Cool on a cooling rack.

Tips and Tricks

  • Don't skip refrigerating the dough! Refrigerating the dough will stop the cookies from spreading too much.
  • Add more cinnamon! If you love cinnamon, feel free to add more cinnamon to the topping.
  • Try pumpkin spice kefir! Instead of vanilla kefir, try pumpkin spice for more of a Fall inspired snickerdoodle.
  • These are light and airy cookies! Almost life the tops of muffins. They are soft and chewy, instead of being heavy and dense.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make the dough ahead of time?

Yes! You can make the dough ahead of time and let it hang out in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.

How long will these cookies last?

These cookies will last up to 5 days in an air tight container, though if you live in my house, you're lucky if you get 2 days out of them!

Why is there no cream of tartar?

Snickerdoodles usually have cream of tartar in them to help them rise, but these kefir snickerdoodles have baking powder and baking soda to help them rise. The baking soda is activated by the kefir, so no cream of tartar is needed!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups All Purpose Flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoon Cinnamon Plus 1 Tablespoon
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
  • ½ teaspoon Salt
  • 1 cup Butter Room Temperature
  • 1 cup Sugar Plus ¼ cup for topping
  • 2 large Eggs
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • ¾ cup Vanilla Kefir Lifeway

Instructions

  • In a large bowl, mix together the flour, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set that aside.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, cream the butter and sugar for 2 minutes on medium speed.
  • Add the eggs, vanilla, and kefir to the stand mixer and mix well.
  • Add the dry ingredients to the stand mixer and mix for 1 minute until well combined. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
  • When ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a small bowl, mix together ¼ cup of sugar with 1 tablespoon of cinnamon.
  • With an ice cream scoop, scoop out a portion of the dough and roll it into the cinnamon and sugar mixture. Place the dough ball on a parchment lined baking sheet and bake the cookies for 12 minutes until just slightly browned.
  • Allow the cookies to cool on a wire rack before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Instead of vanilla kefir, original flavor or pumpkin spice can be substituted. 
  • The cookies are done when they are just slightly browned and they have spread.
  • Make sure to leave room between each cookie as they do tend to spread a lot.
