Why You'll Love This Sausage Broccoli Pasta
This pasta is one of those recipes that checks every box for a great weeknight dinner. Here is why we love it so much:
- Ready in under 30 minutes. This is a true weeknight hero. From start to finish, you can have a hot, homemade dinner on the table in no time.
- One pan meal. Less mess, less cleanup, and everything cooks together for the best flavor.
- Packed with protein and veggies. Between the sausage and the broccoli, you are getting a well rounded, filling meal all in one bowl.
- Family approved. The savory sausage and tender pasta make this a dish that even picky eaters will clean their plates for.
- Simple, budget friendly ingredients. Nothing fancy here! Just everyday ingredients that come together to make something really delicious.
Sausage Broccoli Pasta Recipe Ingredients
You only need a few simple ingredients you can easily find in your local grocery store!

- Pasta. Your family's favorite shape.
- Sausage. You can buy bulk sausage that is ground or take the casing off the sausage and use that.
- Parmesan cheese. For some nutty, salty flavor. Plus more for sprinkling on top.
- Chicken broth. The pasta cooks right in the chicken broth. Water or vegetable broth will work too.
- Garlic. Everything is better with the flavors of garlic!
- Broccoli. 2 cups of broccoli florets.
- Salt and Pepper. To season the pasta.
Recommended Equipment
The best type of pot to use is a large, nonstick pot that has a lid. Just like in One Pot Meatball Stroganoff, a large Dutch oven will work perfectly as will a deep, nonstick skillet. The most important thing is that is has a lid to cover so the pasta can cook.
How To Make One Pot Sausage Broccoli Pasta
- In a large skillet with a top, add the olive oil. Heat it over medium-high heat for one minute. Add the ground sausage and cook for 4-5 minutes until the sausage is cooked through. Add the grated garlic to the sausage and cook for 1 minute. Make sure to scrape the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon so get all the brown bits.

2. Add the pasta to the pan and the chicken broth. Season with Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Stir to make sure all pasta is in the chicken broth.

3. Add the broccoli to the top of the pasta and do not stir. Lower the heat to medium heat. Close the lid of the skillet and cook for 7-8 minutes or until the pasta is al dente. Open the lid, add the parmesan cheese and give the pasta a good stir. Serve immediately.

Lynn's Tip! Cooking times will vary depending on the pasta you use. Pasta shapes have different cook times. Penne pasta will take 7-8 minutes while bowtie pasta may taken closer to 9 minutes. Use the box instructions for cook time.
Sausage and Broccoli Pasta Recipe Variations
- Use spicy sausage! Use hot Italian sausage instead of sweet Italian sausage and sprinkle in some red pepper flakes for some heat!
- Change the sausage! To lighten up this dinner, use chicken sausage or turkey sausage instead of pork sausage.
- Make it more decadent! Add one cup of heavy cream with the chicken broth or mix in 1 cup of sour cream at the end of the pasta.
- Use broccoli rabe! If it is broccoli rabe season, it's a classic ingredient in sausage pasta. Use that instead of broccoli florets!
Serving Suggestions for Pasta with Sausage and Broccoli
This pasta is hearty enough to stand on its own, but here are some of our favorite ways to serve it and round out the meal:
- Top it with freshly grated parmesan. A generous sprinkle of parmesan over the top takes this dish to a whole new level.
- Add a pinch of red pepper flakes. If you like a little heat, a pinch of red pepper flakes adds a nice kick.
- Drizzle with olive oil. A finishing drizzle of good quality olive oil adds richness and ties everything together.
- Serve with garlic bread. Thick, buttery garlic bread on the side is perfect for soaking up every last bit of sauce.
- Add a simple green salad. A crisp salad with a light vinaigrette is a fresh and easy way to balance out the richness of the pasta.
- Serve with crusty Italian bread. Let everyone tear off a piece to scoop up the extra sauce from their bowl.
How to Store & Reheat Pasta with Sausage and Broccoli
Store any leftover pasta in an airtight container for up to 4 days. To reheat the pasta, place it in an microwave safe bowl and microwave for 2-3 minutes.
You can also reheat the pasta on the stovetop with a little bit of chicken stock or water.

Sausage Broccoli Pasta Recipe FAQs
Use your family's favorite pasta! Any shape or size will do. You can even use gluten free or chick pea pasta in this recipe.
Yes! Parmesan is easy to find, but cheddar cheese, Parmigiano Reggiano, or Romano cheese would all be delicious in this one-pot sausage broccoli pasta.
Sure! You can shred zucchini, chop carrots, chop onions, or slice mushrooms and add them to the sausage.
Yes, you can! This pasta holds up really well as a make ahead meal. Cook everything according to the recipe, let it cool completely, and store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. When you are ready to serve, reheat it on the stovetop over medium heat with a splash of chicken broth or water to loosen the sauce back up. You can also reheat individual portions in the microwave in 60 second intervals, stirring in between, until warmed through. Just keep in mind that the pasta will continue to absorb the sauce as it sits, so adding a little extra liquid when reheating makes a big difference!
Absolutely! Frozen broccoli works great in this recipe and is a convenient option when you don't have fresh on hand. There is no need to thaw it first. Just toss it straight into the pan from frozen and cook until it is heated through and tender. Keep in mind that frozen broccoli can release a little extra moisture as it cooks, so you may want to let things cook for an extra minute or two to make sure any excess liquid evaporates. The end result is just as delicious!
