    Ingredients You'll Need

An overhead shot of the ingredients for chocolate pancakes with pancake mix
    • Pancake Mix. I like Bisquick, but you can use whichever pancake and waffle mix you would like. Your favorite pancake mix is essentially all purpose flour, salt, a bit of sugar, and baking powder.
    • Unsweetened cocoa powder. I like Hershey's but use your favorite brand. If you only have sweetened on hand, that will work in this recipe!
    • Milk. Whole milk, 2%, or your favorite non dairy milk will work. You could even use chocolate milk for more chocolate flavor!
    • Eggs. To keep the pancakes together.
    • Chocolate Chips. Semi- sweet chocolate chips or your favorite brand of chocolate chips.

What Can I Add To Pancake Mix For Flavor?

Pancake mix is very versatile since it is only the dry ingredients that you would need in many recipes! You can add pumpkin to the mix and make pumpkin pancakes with pancake mix or pumpkin waffles with pancake mix. You can even make cookies with pancake mix! I love peanut butter cookies with pancake mix!

    Equipment You'll Need

    • Large Bowl
    • Measuring Cups
    • Liquid Measuring Cup
    • Spatula
    • Griddle Or Non-Stick Pan

How To Make Double Chocolate Pancakes with Pancake Mix

In a large mixing bowl, add the eggs, vanilla extract, and milk. Mix well with a whisk until fully combined.

Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until they are combined. It is ok if there are a few lumps left in the batter.

The dry ingredients are added to the wet ingredients in the bowl
The chocolate chips are added to the large bowl.

    Fold in the chocolate chips.

Preheat a griddle or a skillet over medium heat. Add a small piece of butter to the pan or hot griddle. Scoop out a ¼ cup batter and add it to the melted butter.

A pancake is added to the saute pan.
    The pancake is flipped over.

Let the pancake cook on the first side for 2-3 minutes or until there are bubbles in the center of the pancake. Flip the pancake over and cook on the over side for another 2-3 minutes. Serve immediately.

Tips For Making the Perfect Pancake

    • Do not push down on the pancakes when you flip them. Though it might be tempting to push down on the pancakes, if you want a fluffier pancake, just let it hang out and cook in the pan.
    • The pancakes are ready to flip when the middle bubbles. Small bubbles will start to come through the batter. The edges of the pancakes will also start to dry out. When you see these two signs, it's time to flip the pancakes.
    • Use an ice cream scoop or a measuring cup to measure the batter. This ensures the pancakes are all the same size will cook evenly.
    • Do not cook the pancakes too high. Medium low heat is the best for cooking pancakes. Too high and the outside will be too cooked and the inside will be raw. Too low and the pancakes will take a long time to cook.

How To Serve Double Chocolate Pancakes with Pancake Mix

    • With butter and maple syrup. Classic!
    • Topped with fresh fruit, fresh berries, and fresh whipped heavy cream.
    • Let chocolate syrup or chocolate sauce drip from the top of the pancakes for a super chocolatey breakfast!
    • Make hot chocolate pancakes! Top the sweet pancakes with chocolate sauce and some mini marshmallows! The kids will love that!

    Storage Tips

    • How to store the batter. Once the pancake batter is mixed together, cover the batter with plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container. The batter will stay fresh in the refrigerator up to 24 hours.
    • How to store leftover pancakes. Once the homemade chocolate pancakes are cooked, place the pancakes in an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator up to 4 days. To reheat them, place them in the toaster oven for 1 minute or until the pancakes are warm. You can also reheat the pancakes on the stovetop in a dry pan over medium-low heat.
    • To keep the pancakes warm, after they are cooked place them on a parchment paper lined baking tray or baking sheet and keep them warm in a 200 degree oven.
    • How to freeze the pancakes. Once the pancakes are cooked, allow them to cool completely. Wrap them in plastic wrap and place them in a Ziploc bag. Freeze the pancakes up to 4 months. To reheat the chocolate pancakes, place them in the toaster oven for 2 minutes or reheat them in a dry pan over the stovetop

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use "just add water" pancake mix instead?

Since we are adding eggs and milk to the recipe, you can't use the complete pancake mix. I haven't tried this recipe using that type of pancake mix.

How many pancakes does this recipe make?

The numbers of pancakes you can make depend on how big you make your pancakes. If you make them silver dollar size, you will get over a dozen pancakes. if you make big pancakes, you might only get 6.

What type of cocoa powder should I use?

I always have Dutch-processed cocoa powder on hand. It is high quality cocoa powder and great in many different recipes. Your favorite type of cocoa powder will do in this recipe, though.
