What is Hummus?
Hummus has been around for centuries. It is a popular Middle Eastern dip that was traditionally served with pita bread. Chickpeas were one of the first legumes ever harvested. People tried to use them however they could back then.
Originally combined with lemon juice and olive oil, over the years it has morphed into the hummus we know today. Now, you can find hummus in just about every supermarket in every different flavor, including chocolate!
Ingredients to Gather
- Chick peas. Two cans of your favorite brand of chick peas.
- Fresh garlic cloves. This also makes the hummus just a little more spicy. Don't use garlic powder, you really need the fresh stuff here.
- Sriracha. A condiment I always have in my fridge!
- Lemon Juice. Fresh squeeze lemon juice from one lemon to brighten the flavors of the hummus a bit.
- Crushed red pepper flakes. For even more heat!
- Tahini. A classic ingredient in hummus.
- Salt and pepper. To taste.
What is Sriracha?
Sriracha sauce has become a very popular condiment in the past few years. It is a versatile type of hot sauce created by Huy Fong Foods that is thick and full of chili peppers. Though it's made from chili peppers, it isn't as spicy as many other hot sauces.
It is made of chili peppers, vinegar, sugar, garlic, and salt. Pretty simple ingredients create a spicy and tangy hot sauce. No wonder it's such a popular brand of hot sauce!
I've been known to add sriracha to just about everything! It's one of my favorite flavors! Pasta, eggs, chicken, and even burgers get a little kick! Nothing is off limits!
How to Make Spicy Hummus
Drain the liquid from the chick peas and add the drained chick peas to the food processor.
Add the rest of the ingredients. Close the food processor and turn it on. Combine the ingredients until the hummus has reached the consistency you like. For a smoother hummus, give the food processor a little extra time. Taste the hummus and season with more salt and pepper if needed.
Lynn's Tip!
If you find that once the hummus is pureed, it is not spicy enough to your liking, feel free to add more sriracha or crushed red pepper flakes!
Use a rubber spatula to remove the hummus from the food processor. Allow this delicious spicy hummus to chill in the refrigerator before serving.
Dry Beans Instead of Canned Beans
Just like in my Instant Pot Hummus, dry beans will work in this recipe, it just takes more time.
My favorite way to rehydrate dried beans is to cook them in the Instant Pot. It takes about 90 minutes and they are perfect to puree.
If you do not have an Instant Pot, add 1 cup of dried garbanzo beans to a bowl and cover the beans with water. Let them soak overnight. In the morning, drain the liquid and make the hummus as usual.
Serving Suggestions
This supremely spicy hummus is great on a crudité platter or a big tray with fresh veggies. I've got lots of different ideas for what to dip in hummus! Here are some ingredients to include! Garnish the hummus with even more sriracha or crushed red pepper flakes and just a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil.
- Pita chips (homemade in the air fryer or store bought is great!)
- Warm Pita Bread
- Baby Carrot sticks
- Baked tortilla chips
- Celery sticks
- Sliced cucumbers
- Sliced red bell peppers
- A variety of crackers
Storage Tips
Once the hummus is made, place it in an airtight container and keep it in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
Did you know you can freeze hummus too? It's true! Place the hummus in a freezer safe container and freeze it for up to 3 months. To defrost the hummus, simply place it in the refrigerator until it defrosts. Couldn't be easier!
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes! Use ¼ cup of olive oil and ½ teaspoon of sesame oil. Since tahini is just sesame seed paste, you will get the same flavors from a little sesame oil.
If you do not like sriracha, or do not have it on hand, no worries Use your favorite hot sauce, whether that is Frank's, Cholula, a few chipotle peppers, or a homemade hot sauce! You can even add in a sprinkle of cayenne pepper instead of sriracha.
To get a smoother hummus, the trick is to remove the skins from the individual chick peas. I know it sounds crazy, but if you put in the extra effort, you won't believe how delicious and what a smooth texture you will get.
