Can You Pan Fry Chicken Wings?
Pan frying chicken wings is an awesome way to get that perfect crispy skin and juicy meat without needing a deep fryer or oven. You can control the heat better in a skillet, making sure your wings cook evenly and get that golden brown crunch. Plus, you don’t need a ton of oil, so it’s a bit better for your waistline than deep frying.
Pan Fried Chicken Wings Ingredients
You only need a few simple ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen!
- Chicken wings. You can use fresh or thawed chicken wings. It's best to cut them into drumettes and wing pieces. They tend to fit better in the pan that way.
- Olive oil. Olive oil adds flavor but also helps to add crispiness to the wings as they cook.
- Seasonings. For this recipe, we will be using salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and a touch of paprika.

How To Make Pan Fried Chicken Wings
Step 1: After the wings have been cut, pat the chicken wings dry with paper towels to ensure they get crispy. Season them generously with the garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and paprika.
Step 2: Add the olive oil to a pan. Heat the olive oil over medium high heat for a minute or two, until it looks like there are ripples in the oil.
Step 3: Add the wings to the pan in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Cook for about 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until both sides are golden brown and crispy. The internal temperature of the wings should be 165 degrees F.
Lynn's Tip!
Depending on how thick your wings are will depend on how long it takes to cook the wings. Most importantly, make sure that the internal temperature is 165 degrees F.
Tips and Tricks
- It's really important to make sure the wings are dried as much as they can be. This will get the crispiest wings possible! I like drying them with paper towels, that way you can just throw out the paper towel once you are done.
- Don't overcrowd the pan! This will steam the wings, not crisp them up. If you have to do them in batches, do that! Better crispy than soggy!
- Use your favorite seasoning blend! If you have a seasoning blend that you and your family love, use that! This is just a base seasoning recipe, but you can use whatever you like!
- These wings are delicious on a big platter served with carrot sticks, celery sticks, and creamy blue cheese dip. You can make them spicy with creamy buffalo sauce, or sweet by mixing them into 2 ingredient barbecue sauce. The possibilities are endless!
Storage Info
Store any leftover wings in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat in a skillet over medium heat for a few minutes or in an air fryer for 5-7 minutes until heated through and crispy again.
Frequently Asked Questions
It's best to thaw the wings before you want to cook them. This will make sure that the wings are cooked fully and won't burn on the outside but be raw on the inside.
For the most accurate way to tell, use a meat thermometer. This will make sure the wings are at 165 degrees Fahrenheit before you take them out of the pan.
A large nonstick pan is great, but I like to use a cast iron skillet whenever I can and this is a great place for it.
