Pancakes are a favorite in the morning, especially on school days. When you've had enough of regular pancakes, add Nutella to spice them up! Nutella adds a creamy, chocolatey flavor that is fantastic in pancakes!
These pancakes are impressive too! If you are having company, or a sleepover, these are a great breakfast to serve in place of regular buttermilk pancakes.
Sometimes Nutella pancakes are made with Nutella discs. You place Nutella disks on a baking try covered with parchment paper or wax paper and freeze them. These pancakes are much easier to make, no need to freeze anything! The Nutella is mixed right in!

Ingredients You'll Need
This delicious recipe is made from scratch and only require a few simple ingredients.
- All purpose flour. Unbleached flour is best.
- Leavening agents. You will need both baking powder and baking soda for this recipe.
- Salt. To counterbalance the sweetness of the Nutella.
- White Sugar. Just a little to add a bit more sweetness to the pancakes.
- Milk. I used whole milk, but your favorite non dairy milk will work as well.
- Unsalted Butter. Melted butter helps make these the perfect fluffy pancakes.
- Vanilla Extract. For a little extra sweetness.
- Eggs. To keep the pancakes together. The egg yolks add necessary fat to the pancakes.
- Nutella. They are Nutella pancakes after all!
What is Nutella?
Nutella is one of my favorite spreads. It originated in Italy and it is full of hazelnuts and chocolate. You can spread Nutella on toast or crackers, but you can also bake with it! I love making Nutella zucchini bread, Nutella waffles, Nutella thumbprint cookies, and Nutella cheesecake bars. You can't go wrong when you add Nutella!

How To Make Nutella Pancakes
In a medium bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set that aside.
In a large mixing bowl, add the milk, melted butter, and egg. Stir until all the ingredients are combined.
Pour the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Mix until just combined, trying not to overmix. Add the Nutella to the batter and mix until the Nutella is incorporated.
Heat a pan over medium heat. Do not heat the pan higher than medium high heat. Add a small pat of butter to the pan. Scoop the batter into the pan. When the batter starts to bubble and the edges look dry, flip the pancake. Cook for 2 minutes on the other side. Do the same for the remaining batter. Take the pancakes out of the pan and serve with butter and maple syrup.
Tips To Making Perfect Pancakes
- Do not overmix the batter. It's ok if there area few lumps left in the batter. You want to just make sure the dry ingredients are incorporated into the wet ingredients.
- Do not push down on the pancakes when you flip them. Though it might be tempting to push down on the pancakes, that stops the pancakes from being as fluffy as they can be.
- The pancakes are ready to flip when the middle bubbles. Small bubbles will start to come through the batter. The edges of the pancakes will also start to dry out. When you see these two signs, it's time to flip the pancakes.
- Use an ice cream scoop or a measuring cup to measure the batter. This ensures the pancakes are all the same size will cook evenly.
- Do not cook the pancakes too high. Medium low heat is the best for cooking pancakes. Too high and the outside will be too cooked and the inside will be raw. Too low and the pancakes will take a long time to cook.
Substitutions
- Instead of butter, feel free to use a neutral oil like coconut oil, vegetable oil, or avocado oil.
- To increase the nutrition in these pancakes, add ¼ cup of ground flaxseed or 2 tablespoons of chia seeds.
- If you are making these pancakes with pancake mix, follow the instructions for your pancake mix and then add ¾ cup of Nutella once the batter is mixed.
- To make mini pancakes, add 2 tablespoons of the batter to the pan. Flip the pancakes when they start to bubble.
Storage Tips
- How to store the batter. Once the pancake batter is mixed together, cover the batter with plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container. The batter will stay fresh in the refrigerator up to 24 hours.
- How to store the pancakes. Once the cooked pancakes are cooked, place the pancakes in an airtight container and keep them in the refrigerator up to 4 days. To reheat them, place them in the toaster oven for 1 minute or until the pancakes are warm. You can also reheat the pancakes on the stovetop in a dry pan.
- To keep the pancakes warm, after they are cooked place them on a parchment lined baking tray or baking sheet and keep them warm in a 200 degree oven.
- How to freeze the pancakes. Once the pancakes are cooked, allow them to cool completely. Wrap them in plastic wrap and place them in a Ziploc bag. Freeze the pancakes up to 4 months. To reheat the Nutella pancakes, place them in the toaster oven for 2 minutes or reheat them in a dry pan over the stovetop.

No, these are not Nutella stuffed pancakes. If you were going to stuff Nutella pancakes, you would have to freeze the Nutella on parchment paper, then add it to the batter while the batter is in the pan. It can be complicated and difficult, so these Nutella pancakes are made without freezing the Nutella.
A jar of Nutella is best stored in the pantry or cabinet. If you keep it in the refrigerator it will be very hard to spread on toast or pancakes.
