Washing Fruit
When I come home from the grocery store, I wash my fruit and vegetables right away.
The best way to do this is to add the fruit to a large bowl. Fill the bowl with water and add 2 or 3 tablespoons of white vinegar.
The vinegar will kill any bacteria or pesticides that are on the fruit. Dry the fruit and place it in an airtight container. Apples and larger produce can go directly into the refrigerator.
I've also noticed that fruit lasts longer when you clean it immediately when you get home from the grocery store.
How To Make A Fruit Rainbow
First, you'll want to get out the platter that you will be using. Wash all the fruit and cut any fruit that needs to be cut into small pieces.
I like to start from the inside of the rainbow, but you can start from the outside if you prefer. Add the violet, or purple fruit.
Next, add the blue fruit.
After the blue fruit, you'll add the green fruit. If you are using grapes, you can take them off the stem or leave the stems on and let people use the stems as a holder.
Next comes yellow. I used pineapple here, but apples or bananas would be great too.
Orange comes next. Take pieces of clementines or segments of orange as the orange section of the rainbow.
Finally, we have red. I used a mixture of raspberries and strawberries to give a few more options.
How Big Should I Make The Fruit Rainbow?
You'll want to consider the number of guests you will have. ½ cup of fruit per guest is usually enough fruit. If you have a lot of guests that are big fruit eaters, make more!
Fruit will last a long time in the refrigerator, so don't be nervous that there will be too many leftovers.
What To Do With Leftover Fruit
If you have leftover fruit, you can place the fruit in airtight containers and keep them in the refrigerator.
You can also make smoothies! Place 1 cup of fruit into a Ziploc bag and freeze the fruit. When you are ready to make smoothies, add the fruit to a blender, top with orange juice or milk and blend.
When you work with frozen fruit, you don't have to worry about adding ice to the smoothies. This will also extend the life of the fruit and keep it from going bad.
Frequently Asked Questions
When you put the platter together, add a squeeze of lemon juice over the platter. This will stop fruit like apples and pears from browning.
You can serve it with a whipped feta dip, a caramel apple dip, or simply with whipped cream.
Yes! You can make this up to 12 hours in advance. Cover the platter with plastic wrap and keep it in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.
