Ingredients To Gather
- Ziti pasta. The classic pasta in baked ziti. The shape of the tubed pasta is perfect to catch all the cheese and sauce.
- Tomato sauce. You can use your favorite spaghetti sauce. If you prefer to make your own you can make your own homemade marinara sauce too! Jarred tomato sauce often has Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper already in it so you don't have to add any extra ingredients.
- Mozzarella cheese. To get that ooey gooey cheesy flavor.
- Ricotta. Ricotta gives this baked pasta dish so creamy. You can use whole milk or skim milk ricotta.
- Eggs. The eggs keep the pasta mixture together.

Substitutions and Variations
- Change the pasta! You can use a gluten-free pasta, rigatoni pasta, or whatever you favorite pasta shape is. Any pasta will be delicious in this easy baked ziti recipe.
- Add some protein! Just like in my chicken parmesan pasta bake, boneless, skinless chicken breast can be sautéed over medium-high heat with a tablespoon of olive oil and then added to the pasta mixture. Lean ground beef, mild Italian sausage, or ground turkey can all be added to the pasta.
- Change the sauce! This is a classic marinara recipe using premade tomato sauce, but you can use a meat sauce or a Bolognese sauce instead for more protein. Feel free to add more flavoring to the sauce such as red pepper flakes, fresh basil, or more Italian seasonings.
- Add more cheese! We love mozzarella, but you can add some parmesan cheese, Pecorino Romano cheese, an Italian cheese blend that you can find in the local grocery store. Cottage cheese or cream cheese is often added to recipes to make this cheesy baked ziti even more cheesy.
- Add veggies! Fresh spinach, chopped onions, chopped zucchini, chopped eggplant, or your favorite veggies to this cheesy pasta.
