A fun way to add some Halloween spirit to your chips and dip, these spooky Halloween tortilla chips are baked to perfection in only a few minutes! Light, crispy, and healthier than their fried versions, these are perfect to serve with your favorite salsa or guacamole at your Halloween party!

I love a good tortilla chip. Don't get me wrong. But after eating a bunch of chips and salsa at a party, I feel pretty gross the next day. All that oil and all those fried chips just aren't great for you.

Bring on the baked variety! And the best part is, these are easily made into fun shapes to serve at your Halloween party, or even on game day as we get closer to Halloween!

Serve them with Spinach and Artichoke dip, Roasted Garlic and Eggplant Dip, or an Instant Pot Hummus! So good!

Why You'll Love These Tortilla Chips

    • They are healthier than their fried versions! Just a touch of oil and some salt is all you need to make these spooky Halloween baked tortilla chips.
    • They are versatile! Depending on the cookie cutters you have, use whatever type of tortilla you would like. I used tomato for the pumpkins, spinach for the bats, and whole wheat for the witch's hat.
    • Get the kids involved! My daughter loved brushing the oil on the cut outs! And she loved eating the different shapes with some healthy dips.

    Ingredients You'll Need

This is a super simple recipe, with only 3 ingredients!

Ingredients for the baked Halloween tortilla chips
    • Tortillas- Flour tortillas are what I used for this recipe, but corn tortillas would work as well.
    • Oil- You can either brush the olive oil onto the cut tortilla pieces, or you can use cooking spray. Olive oil or avocado oil is best.
    • Salt- To season the chips.

    Equipment You'll Need

    • Halloween Cookie Cutters
    • Baking Sheet
    • Parchment Paper
    • Pastry brush or olive oil sprayer

How To Make Halloween Baked Tortilla Chips

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Lay out your tortillas on a cutting board. Press the cookie cutters into the tortillas to create the shapes.

The tortillas and Halloween cookie cutters are laid out

Place the cut tortilla pieces onto a parchment lined baking sheet. Arrange the tortillas in a single layer on the baking sheet.

Brush the tortilla pieces with olive oil or spray them with cooking spray. You don't have to season both sides, one side is enough that way it's not too salty or oily.

A hand is brushing oil on the tortilla cutouts

Sprinkle salt on the tortilla pieces and bake for 10 minutes. Keep an eye on them. If the tortilla is a thin tortilla, they might only need 8 minutes.

What Type of Tortilla To Use

There are so many different tortillas out there, and this technique will work for all of them!

    • Corn tortillas- This would be a great substitute. Bake them for about 12 minutes and check after 12 minutes to ensure they aren't burned and that they cook through.
    • Gluten Free Tortillas- There are some great varieties of gluten free tortillas that you can purchase.
    • Whole Wheat Tortillas- A little bit of a healthier option, I love using whole wheat tortillas whenever possible.
    • Vegetable Tortillas- A lot of tortilla brands now add vegetables into the tortillas. You can purchase spinach, tomato, or basil and herb.

    Get The Kids Involved!

My daughter helped me make these and she loved being in the kitchen with me!

Let your kids choose the cookie cutter shapes. For Halloween, some fun cookie cutters are cats, bats, pumpkins, or skeletons. You can find cookie cutters for all occasions, like Christmas, Valentine's Day, or even St. Patrick's Day. You can use this recipe and make baked tortilla chips throughout the year!

My daughter loved brushing the oil on the tortillas as well. Did she go overboard a few times? Sure! But we made it work. I was able to distribute the oil over all the tortillas and they tasted great! You can also let kids sprinkle the salt on the tortillas.

    Tips and Tricks

    • The chips will harden as they cool. Once the chips turn just golden brown, they are done. They burn very quickly if you leave them in the oven too long. Keep an eye on the oven throughout the cooking process.
    • To elevate the flavor of the chips, add chili lime seasoning, dried barbecue seasoning, or Italian seasoning to make these chips a little more exciting!
    • If you don't want to use cookie cutters, simply cut these chips into triangles and bake them off.
    • Use a kosher salt instead of a traditional table salt. You want a little bit of a crunch and visible salt on the chips. A coarse, kosher salt is best but a fine kosher salt works well too.
The chips are on a square plate with a bowl of pico de gallo

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do you store these baked tortilla chips?

To store them, place them in a Ziploc bag on the counter. They will last for 3-4 days like that. If you want to crisp them up a little, place them in a 350 degree oven for 5 minutes.

What should I do with the excess tortillas?

Since we are cutting the tortillas with cookie cutters, there will be excess tortillas. Place them on a baking sheet, coat them with olive oil, and sprinkle with salt. These would be great homemade salad toppers or chili toppers on a cold night!

Do I need to flip the tortilla chips through the cooking process?

No! There's not need to flip the tortilla pieces throughout the cooking process. The heat from the oven and then the heat from the baking sheet will cook the chips and cook them perfectly.

Can I freeze Halloween tortilla chips?

I wouldn't freeze them once they are baked. You can freeze bags of tortillas, and then when you are ready to make these chips, defrost the tortillas and cut them. Bake them as recommended. If you bake them and then freeze them, they will get soggy and not hold their shape.
